In addition to the core services BTW provides, we have contracted with other groups to provide additional programs for young people.

  • Substance abuse risk identification and assessment

BTW offers drug prevention workshops and seminars to children, teens and adults, as well as referrals to Phoenix House.

  • Project CLASS (Clean Living And Staying Sober)

A program that provides intensive social services to families who have a history of substance abuse.

  • Mentoring

Through a relationship with Westside Crime Prevention Program, at-risk youth at MS 54 are paired with concerned adults who provide them with a positive one-on-one relationship with a caring adult.

  • Computer Lab

BTW has a computer lab with new computers, three printers and a large-screen television monitor. This lab is used for afterschool programs, during the evening and weekends and provides computer training for children, teens and adults, including the SMART program.

  • Saturday Academy

A multi-media technology program that combines academic outreach and academic monitoring. Saturday Academy provides opportunities for middle and elementary BTW students who are at risk of dropping out of school due to poor attendance and academic performance and/or a language barrier.

  • Century 21 Afterschool Program

is an additional afterschool program at BTW that the Beacon operates for the school until 3 P.M. for gifted students.

  • Recreational Activities

BTW offers a wide variety of activities including basketball, soccer, volleyball, salsa dancing, football, double-dutch, cheerleading, and an annual Hotshot Basketball and Softball tournament in which inner-city teams participate.

  • Leadership Group

In collaboration with The Valley, BTW helps teens develop social acquisition skills through community service projects and various workshops conducted by The Valley such as teen pregnancy prevention and academic counseling.

  • Teen Youth Council

Youth plan and organize special events for evening programs, represent the youth in the program, conduct leadership workshops around drug prevention and crime. The 30 teens on the council range in age from 15 to 20 years and must maintain a strong academic record to remain on the council.

  • Teen Lounge

A loosely-structured social activity for teenage participants in the Evening Program. Members engage in board games, table tennis competition, video games, and various socialization activities.
