In all of our preventive programs, our philosophy is not just to serve the child and parent who enter our preventive program, but to provide a range of services to the entire family. As part of the family strengthening approach, the Harlem Children's Zone offers an array of adult, adolescent, elementary and infant services including after school and weekend activities for the children and their parents. In addition, the majority of our prevention programs are located within or near the Beacons Schools or the Harlem Children's Zone Project, which has programs that offer an extensive array of community supports.
- Connecting with Beacons
Each year approximately 4,000 children and adults in Community Boards 7 and 10 can access the array of services provided by the Harlem Children's Zone Beacon Schools: the Countee Cullen Community Center on West 144th Street and the Booker T. Washington Center 54 Beacon at West 107th Street. Open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays, the Beacons provide services and activities for children, teens and adults. Our Beacons are ideal locations for identifying children and families in need of preventive services. Both Beacons were intentionally located on blocks with heavy drug trafficking and are dedicated to providing positive alternatives to substance abuse.
