HCZ President and CEO Geoffrey Canada was a featured guest on the April 1, 2010 broadcast of NPR's The Takeaway. Along with Valerie Purdie-Vaughns, assistant professor of psychology at Columbia University, he addressed the issue of closing the racial achievement gap in our schools. Harvard study of HCZ gets OK from federal agency

A study by Harvard economist Roland Fryer of HCZ's Promise Academy charter school was given a thumbs up by the "famously tough reviewers" at the U.S. Department of Education's What Works Clearinghouse, as reported by Education Week. Dr. Fryer, comparing students who won the admission lottery with those who did not win, found that the Promise Academy middle school students had closed the black-white achievement gap in math and significantly narrowing it in English.
