Our Results

Note that the HCZ Project Pipeline actually has two tracks: about 1,200 children now go through the Promise Academy Charter School, but the organization also supports the children who attend the public schools in the Children's Zone or who live in the Zone and go to school elsewhere.

Baby College

  • In fiscal year 2010, Baby College graduated 407 individuals
  • 86% of Baby College parents who read to their children less than 5 times a week at pre-test, improved their frequency
  • 92.5% of respondents said they had learned a lot from the classes

Harlem Gems

  • Of the 190 four-year-olds that entered the Harlem Gems in the 2009-2010 school year, 16.5% had a school readiness classification of delayed or very delayed. By the end of the year, there were no students classified as "very delayed" and the percentage of "advanced" had gone from 21.3% to 41.6%, with another 6.8% at "very advanced," up from 2.1%. 99.5% of students attained a school readiness classification of average or above.

HARLEM PEACEMAKERS

  • Serving 2,478 children, 107 Peacemaker interns were trained and placed throughout HCZ programs, including seven Harlem public elementary schools and Promise Academies I and II

Promise Academy

  • 100% of third graders at Promise Academies I and II tested at or above grade level on the math exam, outperforming their peers in New York State, New York City, District 5, and black and white students throughout the state
  • Over 98% of Promise Academy II's students scored at or above grade level on the math exam, outperforming their counterparts in New York State, New York City and District 5, as well as black and white students in New York State
  • In English and Language Arts (ELA), over 93% of Promise Academy I third graders tested at or above grade level, outperforming New York State, New York City and District 5 peers, as well as black and white students in New York State
  • Over 84% of Promise Academy II's students scored at or above grade level in ELA, outperforming on average their counterparts in New York State, New York City and District 5, as well as black students in New York City
  • In 2008, 93% of Promise Academy High School ninth graders passed the statewide Algebra Regents exam.

TRUCE Media and Fitness

  • 97% of TRUCE seniors graduated from high school by August 2010; 100% of seniors applied to college and all of these students were accepted into at least one school.
  • TRUCE Fitness participants have won 149 trophies in martial arts competitions this year, including 71 first-place trophies.
  • TRUCE Fitness students won HCZ's Wellness Challenge two years in a row, losing the most weight (135 and 86 pounds) among our programs.

Employment and Technology

  • 100% of high school after-school program participants (284 of 284) stayed in school
  • ETC seniors received over $1.8 million in financial aid, including full scholarships and grants

  • 626 HCZ after-school program participants are enrolled in college
  • 254 students were accepted into college for the 2010-2011 year, representing 90% of our high-school seniors.
  • This incoming freshman class obtained over $6.4 million in scholarships and grants

COMMUNITY PRIDE

  • Community Pride has organized or rejuvenated 39 block associations
  • The Community Advisory Board is active with 35 members

Family SupporT CENTER

  • In 2009-2010, Family Support Center staff served 152 families.
  • 99% of the families remained intact during this period.
  • 100% of these families received counseling at the individual, family and/or group level

The Harlem Children’s Zone Asthma Initiative

  • HCZAI has enrolled 1,436 children since the program’s inception.
  • Participants have experienced:
    • Fewer missed days of school (at pretest, 29.7% of children had missed school due to asthma in the previous 14 days. Forty-two months later, only 6.8% had missed school due to asthma in the previous 14 days).
    • Fewer emergency room visits (at pretest, 47.2% of children had visited the emergency room for treatment of asthma in the last 3 months. Forty-two months later, 16.1% of children had visited the emergency room for treatment of asthma in the last three months.
