History Tutor (Grades 6—8), Tutor Institute

We are seeking History Tutors to work closely with our middle school students, grades 6 – 8.  Tutors serve as a part of the Harlem Children’s Zone mission to support our students throughout their academic careers. They must be able to communicate effectively with students while remaining professional. Tutors must also be able to motivate and maintain the interest of the students while setting an example in all areas, including timeliness and attendance. Additionally, they must take a sincere, active, and appropriate interest in the well being of all students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Work one on one with students to provide them with academic tutoring
• Work in small group settings preparing students for State Exams and the Scholastic Aptitude Test
• Log all tutoring sessions—write a report detailing the interaction, achievements, and concerns about the students performance
• Attend periodic staff meetings for youth evaluation and information exchange among Tutors, Student Advocates, and supervisors
• Administer assessments and collaborate with staff to analyze scores
• Create strategies to target areas of concern
• Performs other duties assigned

 Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

• A commitment to the mission and programs of HCZ
• Must be enrolled in a college degree program; Bachelor’s degree preferred
• A concrete understanding of general Social Sciences
• Strong ability to write essays
• Working knowledge of core Social Studies curriculum used by the NYC Department of Education
