Our Accomplishments

How Our Work is Succeeding for Poor Children and Families

Sometimes great chess champions, like great chess moves,
come from unexpected places

Recently, world chess champion Garry Kasparov (picture above, center) simultaneously played against 20 HCZ students during the HCZ Chess Festival.

In 2009, the chess program served 106 children throughout HCZ who went on to win 78 trophies. At the Super Nationals in Tennessee (attended by over 5,000 players), Malik Perry took 23rd place in the K-12 open division and Kikosi Nkululeko took 21st place in the K-12 and Up/1600 or higher-ranked division. HCZ teams also did very well in the All Girls Nationals in Texas.

In April 2008 at the national chess championship in Dallas, Chamari Johnson, Mouminatou Barry and Aisha Camara from TRUCE Fitness and Nutrition were the three top-scorers in the 12-and-under tournament.  In addition, 11th grader Madrina Parilla won the individual competition for girls 18-and-under, which had a price of a $65,000 scholarship. In all the HCZ team took home five trophies in Dallas and 85 over the course of 2008.

If you're looking for the third-graders who are below grade level in math,
you'll have to go to another school

This past spring, 100 percent of the third-graders at HCZ Promise Academy II scored at or above grade level in the statewide math tests. A few blocks away, 100 percent of the Promise Academy I third-graders were at or above grade level.

Many of these children have been in HCZ programs from the time their parents were in The Baby College, which highlights the effectiveness of our comprehensive model of supporting children.
